A little story about us....

Thornbury Learning Centre (TLC) was established in 2018 by Julia Atkinson as an after-school program combined with homework help.

When the world shifted in 2020, Julia decided to bring her magic online to keep students engaged and supported through their screens. Eventually, as life settled into a new rhythm, TLC paused.......but great ideas—and great educators—don’t stay quiet for long.

2024, enter...... Susanne Curry. As Susanne prepared to move from Grenada to Thornbury, after 20 years in education, she began discussions with Julia to re-launch TLC. Both shared deep roots in education, and a passion for supporting children with learning. Susanne was excited to join TLC and to share her passion and joy for learning with her new students.

With the addition of Susanne and her expertise in primary education, TCL has now added more offerings to the mix supporting children ages 6-18, in all subject areas and learning challenges, both face to face and online. .

Julia Atkinson

Julia Atkinson is an online teacher and international tour guide at Blyth Academy, where she supports students in their academic and personal development. Julia teaches English, ESL, and Photography. She has over 25 years of experience in synchronous and asynchronous education.

Her specialties include English, humanities, study skills, and helping students navigate the often-overwhelming world of high school. Whether your teen is looking to improve writing, stay organized, catch up, or prepare for post-secondary success, Julia knows how to meet them where they are—and guide them forward with compassion and clarity.

When she’s not teaching, you’ll find her helping out at the Marsh Street Centre, boating, or cheering on her own teens (John and Teddy) in their latest adventures.

M.Ed, BA, Montessori MACTE - Offers support to children ages 3-12, and family coaching.

Susanne Curry

Susanne Curry joins TLC with over 20 years of experience in education, Susanne brings both deep expertise and a joyful, child-centred approach to her work. She is Montessori-trained and spent much of her career in the Caribbean, where she founded and directed a thriving Montessori school.

Now based in Thornbury, Susanne specializes in early literacy using Reading Simplified, foundational math (with a hands-on, visual approach).

When she’s not teaching, Susanne is a children’s author, a snow-lover, and a mom to her active 8-year-old daughter, Naomi.
